As an editor of popular UK sightseeing website we receive hundreds of requests a month for information regarding entry prices of many of the London museums but we though it would be very useful for our readers to put together this guide to some of the most famous museums in London that are free entry. In fact three of the most popular museums in the whole of England are located in a single road in London - Exhibition Road in Kensington. The nearest London underground tube station is South Kensington a mere two minute walk from the attractions.
Not many people realise that a lot of the world famous museums and galleries in London are free for tourists to enter. Many ask for a voluntary donation when you enter to put towards the general running costs and upkeep of the attraction but this is entirely optional.
Your day you should probably start by heading for the natural history museum which is completely free to enter. In fact the Natural history museum offers pretty much a full day of interesting sights especially if you stop for lunch and pause to take in all of the areas. You can see most of the main exhibits in half a day. Take a packed lunch and a camera to take photos and you are all set.
If you have time - just around the corner are the science museum and the Victoria and Albert Museums. Either are a short 5 minute walk away. Whilst the Natural History museum caters for all ages and interests, you may want to decide which one is right for you. The science museum is great for all ages and for those with an interest in science and technology whereas the Victoria and Albert museum is a museum of decorative arts and design, housing a permanent collection of over 4.5 million objects. Both are free to enter, and both will take another half a day to see. Decide which one you wish to visit but you wont be disappointed with either.
Just around the corner in Kensington Road is the Royal Albert Hall another one of Londons popular architectural sights to see. Finally, another amazing piece of architecture is the London Oratory of which building on the structure began in 1878. Located around the corner from the station in Brompton Road. Worth a visit if you are in the area.
Your day seeing the museums is now pretty much finished and you will probably be a little tired from walking around the huge museums, but you might not want to stop there. Just a short walk away is the Serpentine Gallery - Located on the South side of the picturesque Kensington Gardens is the Serpentine Gallery which is free to enter and displays an amazing exhibition of modern and contemporary Art.
