Exterior Wall
Coatings
Painting and decorating the interior of your home may be as
simple as choosing the right colour but when it comes to the exterior walls,
there are several things to be taken into consideration before you start
thinking about different shades. Your exterior wall coating needs
to be waterproof but often this isn’t enough. It also has to protect your home
from different weather conditions, protect your walls from rain and damp coming
into your house while still allowing the moisture from the interior, to be able
to pass through the wall and out without trapping the moisture inside. Like
paint, exterior wall coatings come in a range of colours and you can choose a
final finish from course to smooth but unlike paint, you won’t need to repaint
at all.
There are many different types around today. When
choosing your exterior wall coating you have to take into account the age of
your house or of the wall, what specific weather conditions you have, how the
wall was constructed, and whether you have any extensions or plan on extending.
LIME BASED RENDERS
These are plaster
masonry coverings for exteriors, with a mineral binder base, which enables a
finish to be obtained which closely resembles that of the coloured plastering
to be found in the buildings in Venice.
Plaster creates a rather thick, rough coat, offering outdoor resistance
and featuring a high level of permeability. The product proves particularly
suitable for restoration work in buildings of particular historical and
artistic interest.
SILOXANE WALL COATINGS
These coatings
with an acrylic – siloxane, anti-algae binder base are highly water repellent
with a compact finish effect, creating a rough layer of considerable thickness,
resistant to the aggressive action of atmospheric agents and alkaline surface. They
meet criteria of the most demanding client and are suitable for restoration
projects.
MINERAL WALL COATINGS
Mineral
Wall Coatings are protective
renders based on modified and inert potassium silicate, inert minerals such as
quartz and marble, suitable to protect and decorate external walls.
This
type of exterior coatings offer high permeability, excellent resistance to
atmospheric agents, high fillings and masking powers, particularly suited to
protection of old mortar and in the restoration of old buildings, as it
delivers a pleasant aesthetic effect with soft shadows.
PLASTIC THICK WALL COATINGS
Plastic Thick Wall
Coating products enable a thick coating to be created which is capable of
providing outdoor resistance and protecting the surface against pollutants.
These products are also used where resistance against frequent cleaning is
required. Some are particularly well suited for refinishing of surfaces with
tiny cracks caused by withdrawal of plaster or by structural settling.
Thanks to their acrylic
binder these are also capable of resisting against the alkaline aggressiveness
characteristic of cement-based surfaces.
INSULATING
SYSTEMS
These bring energy savings and lowers bills. The energy used in
residential building to heat interiors accounts for approx. 30% of total national energy
consumption. It is also responsible for approx. 25% of total carbon dioxide emissions, one of the main causes of
the greenhouse effect and of the resulting increase in the earth's temperature.
Benefits of insulating system
- Benefits
for environment.
- Improvements
in occupants' comfort and wellbeing.
Insulating systems are usually finished with outdoor coating resistant to the aggressive
action of atmospheric agents. Enriched with anti-mould additives they preserve
treated surfaces against the formation of mould, algae and moss.
So with the above considered, how can we distinguish what
type of wall needs what.
Many exterior wall finishes are appropriate to certain
factors such as the age of the house, the method of construction, the typical
weather at the location, and other factors.
No matter what material your exterior walls are made of or
the style of your home, there is a wall coating that is suitable
